Why China built the Great Wall? What is the function the Chinese Great Wall?

The Great Wall is a great defense project in ancient China which is also the world’s most durable and labor consuming defense work. During the Spring and Autumn Period (seventh century BC), various small countries built up walls to defend against the invasion of other countries. With beacons built connecting the wall, the main body of the Great Wall was form. In the later 2,000 years’ history, almost all the kings contributed to the reinforcement and upgrading of the Great Wall for the defense against the threat from the minorities living in the north part of China (in the north side of the Great Wall). Because the Great Wall is as long as tens of thousands of miles (over 5,000 km), it is also called as the “10-thousand-mile wall(万里长城)”.
