In the southwest of Anshun City, Guizhou Province, there is a famous cliff cave where people can see mountains of the coffins exposed to air which exhibit the local time-honored weird custom – “Cave Pileup Coffins”.

According to local folklore, the original inhabitants migrated from the Central Plains areas to the hinterland mountains of Guizhou to avoid war a few centuries ago. Legend tells that since the original inhabitants hoped that one day they still can return to their ancestral homes, thus instead burying the dead they accumulate the coffins in the cave.

Another version about the origin of the custom is that floods often happen in the region, in order to avoid suffering of flooding of the deceased, the coffins are placed in the cave; and placing the coffins in the caves of mountain also means that the deceased can be more closer to the sky (heaven).
