Human Rights Record of the United States in 2012

According to the Xinhuanet reports, Xinhua Beijing, today (April 21) the Information Office of the State Council of the People’s Republic of China released “The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2012” in response to the recently released “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices 2012” by the U.S. State Department in which distorted accusations were found in relate to China’s human rights.

“The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2012” claims that the U.S. government seems to be a “human rights defender” in the just-released “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices 2012” by picking faults with the human rights situation in more than 190 countries including China, and makes irresponsible remarks, but the US government avoids talking about the human rights problems of its own. But facts show that there are serious human rights issues in the US which have been criticized by the world. The “2012 US Human Rights Record” provides some factual statements of some human rights issues in the United States for a record, thus people from around the world would have a glimpse of the human rights situation in the United States.

“The Human Rights Record of the United States in 2012” exposes the human rights problems in the United States from six aspects:

Life and personal safety;

Civil and political rights;

Economic and social rights;

Racial discrimination;

Women and children’s rights;

Violations of other countries’ human rights.

This is the 14th consecutive year that the Information Office of the State Council issued “The Human Rights Record of the United States” in response to the “Country Reports on Human Rights Practices” annually published the United States.

The “Record” points out that gun crime has been a serious threat to life and personal safety of the citizens. In 2012, the occurence of Oakland school shootings, the Colorado “Century 16” cinema shootings and Connecticut school shootings and the number of casualties in these cases shocked the world.

The “Record” points out that the elections in the United States can not sufficiently reflect the real will of all citizens. Political contribution largely affected the electoral process and policy direction. In the 2012 U.S. presidential election, only 57.5% of the voters participated in the vote.

The “Record” said the U.S. government had further restricted civil and political rights by continually expanding the personal communication monitoring. The police often abuse their power, leading to rising complaints and allegations of violations of civil rights. The increase the proportion of female victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse is also witnessed.

 The “Record” claims that the United States has serious infringements of the human rights of other countries. In 2012, the United States military operations in Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries, had resulted in a large number of innocent civilians death and desecration of the religious feelings of the local people. During war with Iraq, the U.S. military had used the white phosphorus bombs and depleted uranium shells which led to substantially increase of the baby birth defect rate in post-war Iraq.
