Song: In the Spring In the Spring (春天里)

By | February 18, 2013

With the booming of the economy in China, big cities like Beijing have been attracting international and domestic investment as well as focus for long. When studying, working and living in the capital became a dream for a generation, the overcrowded Beijing had actually turned down most people’s expectation, even for the locals. This situation is enhanced by the sky-high pricing of housing.

In the video above, two farmer workers performing the song “In the Spring” in the Spring Festival Gala of 2011 had voiced out the heart of people in the lower class working in the big cities like Beijing. They are not well protected in the early years of urbanization and their life as immigrants still deserves more social attention and care even today. With the speedup of the social welfare building, we do hope the difficult life for the lower class would become history really soon.

The lyric is translated as follows:-

I do recall many years ago, in the spring,

When I did not cut the hair,

When I did not have a credit card nor her,

When I did not have a home with 24-hour hot water,

But I was so happy,

Although I only had a broken guitar,

And played in the street, or under a bridge, or in the farm,

Playing songs that nobody cared,

If one day I become an old men and nobody takes care of me,

Please let me stay in the old time,

If one day I leave quietly,

Bury me in the spring

I still remember those lonely springs,

When I did not have a beard,

There was no valentine gift,

There was no my little princess,

But I felt that everything was not so bad,

Although I only had illusions of love,

(But I was) singing the songs that nobody cared

In the morning, at night, in the wind,

Maybe someday I become an old men and nobody takes care of me,

Please let me stay in the old time,

If one day I leave quietly,

Bury me in the spring,

Maybe someday I become an old men and nobody takes care of me,

Please let me stay in the spring,

Maybe someday I become an old men and nobody takes care of me,

Please bury me in the spring, in the spring…
