Learning Event of Being a Practice English Teacher

 

1.        Identification of learning needs

 

1.1    Teaching skills

 

As I am really interested in the teaching job and with the plan to become a teacher in the middle school after my graduation in the future, the most desired skill that I need to obtain in the learning event of being a practice English teacher is to master the teaching skills. The teaching skills in the formal school include ability to convey the competence into subject matters, ability to provide feedback to the students about the key tasks, and ability to foster an effective learning environment and so on.

 

1.2    Communication skills

 

Beside the individual needs in teaching, I also need to develop communications skills which could be defined as the ability to realize communicative goals while behaving in a socially appropriate manner (Hargie 2006, p.11). Tough in my own understanding, I have always been a girl with positive attitude in learning and daily life and would like to talk to people and also participate in various forms of social activities, communication skills in the environment of middle school could be very different because whom I would communicate with are teenagers and others teachers, both these two group of people are special and different from other social groups, and I will need more knowledge to understand the psychological activities of them and the skills of how to communicate with them.

 

1.3    Language competency – pronunciation of English

 

For English teachers, standard and clear pronunciation is of significant importance to the work (Kersaint, Thompson & Petkova 2009). As an English teacher, the pronunciation of English would be followed and imitated by the students who are still in their learning process; this means that the pronunciation of English must be standard, loud and clear. So before the actual work as the practice English teacher, I would need some training to enhance my pronunciation of my English.

 

1.4    Computer knowledge – ability to use office software

 

With the increasing use of computer technology in the classroom such as playing teaching video and demonstrating PPT slide, I would need to learn more computer relative knowledge especially the ability to use the office software such as the Microsoft Power Point and Word. The low computer proficiency would reduce the effectiveness and efficiency of the class and the learning process of the students. And the use of office software will not only be needed in the teaching job but it also will benefit my future jobs even I would not do the job of teacher in the future.

 

2.        Learning design

 

2.1    Pre-work Training

 

The pre-work trainings of any forms are all designed to give the new employee a clear understanding of the job nature and purpose as a member of the team in the working environment (McManus & O’Toole 2004, p.41). To learn the teaching skills, it is necessary to request the school to hold a pre-work to prepare me with the necessary skills such as the ability to provide feedback to the students about the key tasks, and ability to foster an effective learning environment.

 

 

 

2.2    Orientation with the students

 

As this is the first formal trail as being an English teacher, I would need to have an orientation with the students before I begin the first class myself. Such orientation without being too formal would help me to get familiar with the students and it would be convenient to the later work.

 

2.3    Actual teaching work

 

The actual teaching work will be the most important learning part, and through which I will gain my knowledge and skills in the actual work. I will focus on teaching a class made up of 30 people in the subject of English. And I would also have the goals to be met at the end of the teaching internship.

 

3.        Delivery of learning program

Pre-work training could be held by a senior and experienced English teacher who would be able to educate the teaching skills and at the same time share with me her experience in teaching English in the middle school environment. And the orientation with the students could be held by another teacher or the management of the school. And the implementation of the practical teaching will begin soon after the pre-work training and the orientation, what’s more I will also need to communicate with the other teachers and management of the school regarding the schedule and timetable of the English class to make sure that teaching are delivered in a well preparation manner.

 

4.        Learning evaluation

 

By comparing the learning outcomes and the expected targets, I believe that the investment of my time and energy in the learning event of being a practice English in the middle school is worthy. First of all, I have master the very well the two major learning needs that I had set prior to the learning, they are the teaching skills and the language competency especially my pronunciation of my English tough I had not yet master the computer knowledge and communication skills which may due to the short period of the practice; Secondly, I have gain enough of confidence when it comes to actual work, and this result is not within my expectation. And it is a surprise to me and I really appreciate the time spent in that job as a practice English teacher.
