Overfishing led to cut of fishing output

“At present, the Yangtze River Fishery Resources witnesses a serious recession, the resources and the environment almost collapse.” Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture, Official of Yangtze River Fishery Resources Management Commission, Zhao Yimin said in an interview.

Data released by Department of Agriculture also showed that in 2011 the fishing output in the areas of Three Gorges reservoir area, Dongting Lake and Poyang Lake had been less than 50,000 tons. The natural catches from Yangtze River section in Hubei Province in 2010 was 264,000 tons, in 2011 it was only 206,000 tons, reduced by 22%.

In addition, the number of species was also reduced. A researcher at the Institute of Hydrobiology in Poyang Lake, Liu Huanzhang said “In the 1980s there were 117 kinds of species living in Poyang Lake, last year the number of species found was 86 kinds.”
