North China Groundwater Pollution Prevention program released: underground water quality to be improved in 2020

After 2 months since the hot discussion over the Shandong groundwater pollution, the Ministry of Environmental Protection, Ministry of Land and Resources, the Ministry of Housing and the Ministry of Water Resources jointly issued the “North China Plain Underground Water Pollution Prevention and Control Program” (hereinafter referred to as the “Program”).

This is China’s first regional underground water pollution prevention and control program, the program disclosed the status of the underground water contamination in North China Plain, analyzed the main causes of pollution, and set the future objectives.

According to the program, to the end of 2015, the initial establishment of the North China Plain underground water quality and sources of pollution monitoring network will be finished to have better understanding of underground water pollution. To the end of 2020, the program seeks to achieve a comprehensive monitoring of the status of the North China Plain underground water quality and pollution sources and improvement in underground water quality in key areas as well as other major targets.
