Gansu Provincial Health Department, the Provincial Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Department jointly enacted and released the “Chinese medicine guidance of prevention and control of H7N9 avian influenza in animals” on 23th April 2013.
Gansu Provincial Health Department suggested that H7N9 avian influenza is within the scope of Febrile disease with features like contagious, epidemic, acute onset, fierce and severe illness, and high mortality, prevention is more important than treatment. Animal epidemic prevention in Spring is a critical period for H7N9 strain bird flu prevention in animals. Timely addition of appropriate amount of Chinese herbal medicine in the animal food can play a role of disinfection and as well as enhancing the animal immunity and animal digestion and absorption of nutrients.
Gansu Provincial Health Department issued a “prescription” which is divided into: general preventive method and experience method.
The general preventive method: Add appropriate amount of dandelion, Patrinia, bitter herbs, capillaris or wild bitter gourd (one or several of them) into the animal food for 7 continuous days; or use the mixture of licorice, double flowers, forsythia to be boiled and mixed with food;
Experience method: Add mixture of Jianjisan and Liqinsu (both are Chinese Traditional Medicine, or CTM) according to percentage into the animal food;
The guidance also suggests that the addition of the herbals or CTM will assist to improve the feed utilization and nutrients, enhance the performance of animal products, and improve the quality of livestock and poultry products, and thus help the prevention of animal H7N9 avian influenza in animals.
