Free lifetime health insurance offered to champion atheletes and coaches

On March 18, 2013, the Central People’s Broadcasting Station reported that the Shanghai Sports Bureau signed medical security agreement with a Shanghai hospital making it the designated hospital of medical insurance for champion athletes from Olympic events. It is reported that, according to the agreement the 23 athletes including the famous Chinese 110 meter hurdler, Liu Xiang will enjoy free lifetime health insurance. In addition to these 23 athletes, the Shanghai Sports Bureau also decided to offer champion coaches such as Liu Xiang’s coach Sun Haiping, with same policy.

Medical insurance is the system designed to protect people in case of sickness and illness. And obviously, people living in poverty as well as athletes who can not making sound earning through being the championship of various competitions should be the major audience of the medical insurance. Now it seems that the Shanghai Sports Bureau has just done the opposite by providing free lifetime medical insurance to the champion atheletes and coachs instead of those with true demand. “Excess medical insurance” has become a kind of waste that attracts wide social discussion.
