Chinese scientists first reveal the source of H7N9 influenza virus1

According to the Xinhua News on April 23 (Reporter Dong Jun), Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences today announced that the Harbin Veterinary Research Institute’s research shows that new H7N9 influenza virus causing human infections exists in the livestock in market and they are highly homologous. This reveals the source of the new H7N9 influenza virus from the etiological point of view for the first time in the international arena.

The results show that the new H7N9 influenza virus is the recombinant virus with different sources. Its six internal genes are from the H9N2 avian influenza virus, while the source of hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA) gene is not clear. The research also finds out that the binding sites of the H7N9 virus has obtained adaptive mutation of the human flu which might be the reason why the H7N9 virus killed people.

The breakthrough of the identification of the source of H7N9 influenza virus will provide the development of science reasonable control measures with a theoretical basis.
